Inspired by the lush Art Nouveau style popularized by Alphonse Mucha, as well as the vivid amniotic backdrops of Yoshitaka Amano, and the sparse staging of Audrey Kawasaki, Nolie Marie Wilson’s series of expressive, fantastic portraits spans multiple artistic media, to bring the natural world to life. Pull the mystery of a nymph’s glade into your home, or the charm of a turn-of-the-century lithograph. These pieces are showstoppers–airy, and yet historical, pushing the tools of the media as far as they can go to explore light, and texture, and dimension, and portraiture in materials both new and ancient.
“The Roaring 20s” features vividly decorated pysanky ornaments and centerpieces, complete with intricately arranged and hand-dyed portraits, meticulously researched floriographies, and heart-stopping details. But this series is far more than the miniature detail on chicken eggshells that are Nolie’s signature. It also includes resin block paintings that combine the skill and detail of acrylic painting, the science of resin casting, and the depth and dimension of multi-plane animation, or diorama-building. Each piece requires dozens of hours of intense labor to create, with some details painted or dyed under a magnifying glass, others built up in unending layers, and all of it requiring a complex eye for detail and order to preserve color and clarity.
The purchasing info for each piece in the shop section of the site includes a description of its scale, including the type of eggshell used as its canvas, in the case of pysanky, and the size of the resin block, and its weight, for block paintings. Resin block paintings are intended for display on a table with no further framing needed; edges are sanded smooth to allow it to stand upright without support. The thickness of the painting’s layers prevent it from falling over. If additional framing is desired, please seek professional assistance, due to the resin’s weight. Nolie Wilson is not responsible for any damage that may happen to the resin painting as a result of further framing. Please see Nolie’s Return and Exchange Policy for further information.
